Tools You’ll Use

  • Disinfecting spray
  • Rubbing alcohol and cotton balls
  • Washer and dryer
  • Bleach
  • Dishwasher

Toughest Spots

  1. Dirty doorknobs and touch points
  2. Germy linens, couch pillows, and throws
  3. Used dishes, toothbrushes, and tissues

Handle Your Handles

Doorknobs, faucet levers, and appliance handles collect the most germs, because everyone touches them. Kill the germs with surface-disinfecting sprays that are EPA-registered. If there is visible dirt or gunk, you may need to do a second pass.

For items that cannot be sprayed, such as remote controls, light switches, or phones, use a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol. Swab surfaces carefully so no liquid gets inside.

Bed Check

While plenty of rest helps cure a cold, your sneezing and coughing leaves a lot of bacteria on the bedding and sofa accessories. Gather up the sheets and pillowcases, as well as towels, and wash them in hot water.

If your dryer has one, dry it with the antibacterial cycle. If not, use the highest temperature setting. It is always a good idea to do an empty cycle with your washing machine with bleach to kill off the remaining germs.

Tackle the Other Issues

The CDC says you just need to run the dishes through the dishwasher, or wash them in the sink with hot water. It is smart to replace your toothbrush if you were sick, but it should be replaced every 3 months anyway.

Make sure the wastebaskets get a good wipe down with disinfecting wipes. It is where all the dirty tissues go.

Updated for 2026

The lessons from recent years have made germ-proofing more mainstream than ever. In 2026, many NYC households maintain a dedicated cleaning station near their entryway with hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, and a place to remove shoes.

Air quality has become a major focus. HEPA air purifiers are now standard in many Manhattan and Brooklyn apartments, filtering out airborne particles that traditional cleaning misses. Opening windows for even 15 minutes a day — even in winter — can dramatically improve indoor air quality.

UV-C sanitizing wands and phone sanitizers have become affordable and effective tools for high-touch surfaces. Many New Yorkers keep one in their bathroom for sanitizing toothbrush holders, faucet handles, and countertops between professional cleanings.

For a thorough, germ-busting deep clean, Synergy Maids uses EPA-registered disinfecting products that are tough on germs but safe for your family and pets. Book a deep cleaning and start fresh.
